Firewalk Studio is shutting down after Concord, EA CEO says they are not doing Apex 2.0, Fortnite as a political tool, Ubisoft launched an NFT game and more!
I think I am with you when it comes to the campaign in fortnight. It just feels like a step to far. Not necessarily because of the politics but as the medium becomes more and more excepted by the main streams and higher ups, I worry that it will be infested with ads. Playstation already tried to do this with their home screen right? We will be seeing product placements, ads during loading screens or waiting to find a lobby. I can just feel it. It will hit us like a tidal wave.
I think so, but whenever a gaming company does something related to ads it's usually met with a huuuuge backlash.
My worry is that if we accept this as "normal", then we are expecting the other things too. Next thing you know whenever you are pausing the game you will be bombarded with "Vote Trump" and "50% Colonoscopy Discount at your local hospital!" ads and stuff like that. And I doubt that anybody wants that...But maybe I'm wrong
I'm not necessarily bothered by political messages in games...for me, games are art, and art has been used as a way to deliver messages (political ones too) for a looooong time. This just feels like a natural extension of it. And a smart one at that, going to where your audience might be, instead of asking them to come to you.
That being said, I do hope that there is some sort of gate to access/see this stuff. I don't think children (who for the most part aren't voters) should be served this stuff, on this or any other platform. I know it doesn't prevent a determined child from finding and accessing this stuff, but some gating to acknowledge that the content wasn't necessarily designed for them.
I agree on the smartness of this, but I just find it a little bit weird. And I agree that it's a form of art, but maybe I'm just too invested in that to accept it being used as a delivery system ๐คท
Or maybe because it's the first time it happened from what I've seen and that's why I'm reacting this way
A: So, what were you doing last weekend?
B: Oh, we tried to watch the Oregon Trail movie.
A: What do you mean 'tried'?
B: We did not reached the finale. We Have Died of Dysentery.
